Our Bright and Colorful Powder Room Update

So… we just found a leak in our wall and my son just ran his dirt bike through our newly built fence (kid 1, fence 0), BUT we made our powder bathroom bright, colorful, and vintagey beautiful like 3 years ago. So, let’s focus on that! This was the first room we did after we moved in, and I highly recommend starting with a powder room update, for a few reasons, if you’re overwhelmed by a whole home reno like we were/are. For one, it’s small, and, two, your guests will likely see it. It’s also important to get yourself an achievable victory early on to motivate you to do the rest. Powder rooms are so fun too because they are small, so you can easily go bold, colorful, and fun. I hope you get some inspiration from our bright and colorful powder room update – say yes to some color in your life!

Here’s the completed powder bath at a glance. I love it, 3 years later I still love it, and bonus, it didn’t cost a lot. I don’t have a before photo, but just imagine tan, brown, and more tan.

The only thing that was set was that I wasn’t changing the tannish granite countertops for budget reasons. I played with a ton of color combos, and, in the end, the pink just kind of worked with an assist from the tan-based wallpaper to tie it all together. Pop in a vintage rug and almost anything you do works.

By far, the wallpaper is my favorite (and it’s peel and stick, yay!). I have a serious love for wallpaper (really, there just aren’t enough walls), but, if you’re scared of wallpaper, my tip would be to pick a pattern that is really big so it won’t be too busy for you. And you don’t have to do the whole room; I’ve done just one wall here which saves money too.

There are so many other little details that make this super tiny space cool. This is a place where guests come, so my goal was to make it interesting and happy. These vintage photos were chosen just to make people smile, that’s it, and I find myself looking at them all the time. Add some vintage books, a humorous planter, and a little wall hanging for texture, and you’ve got yourself a happy little bathroom. And, of course, a vintage rug – if it’s a floor it will likely have a vintage rug on it in my home.

Just happiness!

The few things that did cost a buck were updating the faucet and light fixture, but they really add to that vintage vibe. And, as always, I tried to keep the cost down when selecting these. I wanted to modernize it a bit with this hexagon mirror, and the smaller size (21″ x 24″) is perfect for over a single vanity and more affordable as well. Oh, and the little cutie towel ring – how could I forget you? One design conundrum was, do I have to match fixtures and hardware? I decided no – it’s just too constraining for me to have to have them all match, and I like eclectic, so I think it works.

Now that’s one happy little bathroom!

Yay!

With this powder room and with all of my projects, I’m determined to design for the now so that I love it NOW. Guaranteed, it will be outdated in 20 years, there’s just no way around that because styles change, so why not go for the color, pattern, whatever makes you love your home right now? Do it, you won’t regret it! Thank you for letting me share victory number one – I’d love to hear your comments!
