We built this unique patio dining table several years ago, but I recently repainted it from white to this fun color scheme with help from my kiddos. I mentioned repainting it, and when they suggested “rainbow”, I thought, “um, yeah, we should totally do that”. So, we did. But, really, what makes this table so special is it’s funky, asymmetrical shape and the fact that it serves you drinks 🙂. Today, I’ll provide you with the basic dimensions and some close-up photos of how we constructed it. It’s a pretty simple build, and we’ve been using it for over a decade now, so she’s a stout girl. We get lots of comments on the cool design, so, yeah, you should totally build one for yourself!
Build Details
We, first, built the top by laying out the shape we wanted and building out the perimeter. We then just cut top boards to fit and screwed them in. The legs are simply 4×4 posts. I do wish I had made them ~2″ longer for extra leg room under the table, so I’d suggest cutting your 4×4 posts to 30″ rather than 28″.
Here is an up-close photo of the hole we cut for the beverage tub. This is going to be specific to whatever beverage tub you choose. We just sat the tub down on the tabletop and traced the bottom onto the tabletop to get the shape right. Then we decided how far we wanted it to fit down into the top and just measured around with a flexible measuring tape. Based on that size, we redrew the shape we had just drawn on the tabletop slightly larger. We also added that little support board underneath for a little extra support.
Painting
Because this is an outdoor table, I thought painting it kind of messy would be a good idea maintenance-wise. Enter, kids! They did a pretty good “messy” job – one that I couldn’t have done with my A-type personality. It didn’t take much paint – you can just get those little samples from Home Depot for a few dollars. This way, you can get a bunch of colors for not much money.
So, there you have it – a fun little patio update. This is no 30 minute project by any means, but it is relatively simple, and, like I said, we’ve been using this table for over 10 years now. If you decide to give this one a shot, I’d love to hear about it. Cheers!
