Chair Upholstery with a Wool Blanket

Swiss Cross Chair Upholstery

I love vintage furniture, and I’m always looking for solid, unique pieces. I found this chair for $10, yes, $10! I’ll admit that this is probably not the norm, but if you check Facebook marketplace enough, you will eventually get some steals. The cushions were a mauve and were just old, but the chair was in great shape. If I buy something used with fabric, I always recover it anyways, so I just had to figure out what to use. I wanted something different, and I settled on doing the chair upholstery with a wool blanket, and, oh my, I’m in love! Check out the pictures below to see how it turned out.

Isn’t it so cool? I actually used a blanket very similar to this in my son’s room, so obviously, I just love the look. In fact, you’ll find Swiss cross stuff a few other places in my house; it just has a cool vibe to me. I may update this post later with a tutorial because I did use a method that turned out to be pretty easy, but I need to get a little more confident in my approach before I start telling people what to do. I actually intended to only have one cross visible on the back cushion, but I made a mistake in trying to hide the other one, and it ended up on the front of the bottom cushion. My family has recently been watching some Bob Ross, and I’ve decided to take his advice and treat this as a “happy accident”.

Here is the exact wool blanket I used if you are interested. It is not the most cost-effective upholstery fabric, and I did use all of it on this chair, just fyi. The look you get, though, is worth it. One blanket gives you two crosses (they are front and back), and the crosses are stitched on.

This was a fun little project – I’ve kind of got an upholstering bug lately. Old furniture just looks so clean and fresh when you give it new clothes. So, prepare for more unique upholstery ideas and cute pictures with my project sidekick 🙂.
