The Perfect Dark Exterior Color

I knew when we bought our house it just was meant to be super dark blue. So, a few years in, much to the horror of our neighbors, I just started painting our simple light gray house with swatches of every single Sherwin Williams dark blue I could find. At first, people would drive by and say, “No! You’re not…”. Yep, we were. But then, people started driving by and shouting their choice (“Number 3, definitely number 3!”). I left the swatches up for probably a month looking at them in every kind of light. I was so afraid it would look purple in some lights. We finally found the winner, and it’s now been painted for over a year, and it’s seriously the perfect dark exterior color. It’s never purple, definitely blue, but it’s so dark, that I consider it a neutral.

So, what is this perfect color? Sherwin Williams Anchors Aweigh, baby. In the store it will look black, but, rest assured, outside it’s just beautiful. If you’ve read this post about painting our kitchen cabinets, I considered this color, but it’s just not nearly as great inside. But outside, whoa. It’s perfect. Here’s a few pictures that I feel like show the true color.

I hope this post has been helpful if you are considering a dark blue for your exterior. We have had several people drive by while we’re out and stop to ask us what wonderful color this is. While classic white is always beautiful, you can totally shake it up a bit with a dark color and still be neutral. I love pulling up to my house every day, so that’s a win. It helps to motivate me to finish the inside, oh the inside, sigh. Happy painting!
