When our son was four, he asked if his bedroom could not be pink anymore by the time he was five. Pretty reasonable request I thought. To be fair, it wasn’t like hot pink or anything, but it was definitely this weird salmonish color that could be interpreted as pink. He requested blue, red and green, and that’s about it. I’d call this a little boy’s bedroom update with room to grow – I specifically tried to make it not so “little” that he would hate it in a few years. It’s full of things I’ve collected over the years that remind me of him and things he likes, and I just love it.

I knew I wanted a really dark blue, but both of my kids rooms are super tiny, so I did the white at the top to brighten it up a bit. I went with Sherwin Williams Naval for the blue wall color (probably using this color on my kitchen cabinets in our current reno too, stay tuned!). My absolute favorite part is the bunk beds which were my husband’s and his brother’s, and I didn’t touch them – the knicks and scratches just add to the history.
My next favorite part would have to be the wallpaper. I didn’t use much because I really loved the navy and white thing I had going on, but I liked the idea of him laying in his top bunk and having something interesting to look at, so I added this wallpaper. For a boy, what could be better than this? The propeller is from this Etsy shop – they have the coolest stuff for a boy’s room!
The room was looking pretty blue, so I added in some green by spray painting this light fixture (the one I bought appears to be out of stock, but this one has a similar size and shape) and adding this dimmable lamp from IKEA (however, I don’t see the dark green color available anymore). Dimmable is perfect for a kid’s room though because it doubles as a nightlight.
I incorporated red with the bean bag chair and these cool Swiss cross items. I love this Swiss cross blanket so much – so very cool for a boys room! The blanket inspired me to add the red cross decals in the closet as well (which I painted Sherwin Williams Anew Gray).
I can’t go any further without addressing these awesome superhero posters from this shop on Etsy. My son thinks they are so cool, but I also like their look with regards to design, so it’s a win-win.
One of the most important parts of any kid’s room is probably the bookshelf corner. I wanted it to feel comfortable and fun. I like that this room has no real theme; the small gallery wall is a reflection of this feeling that he can be into whatever he’s into. I also love the vintage little desk I found used that is adorned with, what else, a foam finger (yes, our city’s baseball team is the Trash Pandas). For the shelves, that’s just some paint and paint pens – so cute and easy!
And any boy’s room is not complete without a map – a map just screams adventure, right? This map is my absolute favorite. It has so many interesting details, and it’s just fun to look at.
Next, I needed just a few more personal touches. I added some items that reflect his bond with our dog with this vintage picture I found on Etsy and this adorable dog clock (the tail wags!) This cute banner I had printed with a line from his favorite Jeremy Camp song.
I kept asking my son if he wanted a new rug since this was the one that was in his room since he was a baby, and he said he wanted to keep it since it’s always been in his room. It wouldn’t have been my first choice for the room now, but after he said that my sentimental heart was so happy, so that rug won’t be going anywhere. And Chase, the dog, agrees.
I had so much fun doing this room, and I’m sure I’ll continue to update it over the years, but, right now, I completely love it. I hope you found some inspiration here today – thank you for letting me share!
